Telegram has been updated and has finally fixed the issues with overheating and rapid battery drain on smartphones when using the messaging app. As a reminder, starting on December 19, users began complaining en masse about their devices overheating.
What needs to be done?
Update the app to the latest version. When you update Telegram, you'll need to clear the app's cache to ensure everything works properly. Below are detailed instructions on how to do this.
How do I clear the cache in Telegram on Android smartphones and iPhones?
Clearing the cache in Telegram helps free up phone storage by deleting downloaded files, videos, photos, and other temporary app data. The process is slightly different for Android and iPhone.
On Android smartphones:
- Launch the Telegram app on your device.
- Tap the three horizontal lines (menu) in the upper-left corner. Select "Settings".
- Scroll down and click Data and Memory.
- In this section, click on Memory Usage.
- You'll see information about the cache space being used. Click the button "Clear Telegram cache".
On iPhone (iOS):
- Open the Telegram app.
- Click the tab "Settings" in the lower right corner.
- Find the item Data and Memory and click on it.
- Select Memory Usage.
- Click on Clear Cache. Select the categories of data you want to delete, and confirm your selection.
You can also uninstall the app from your smartphone and then reinstall it. This will clear the entire cache at once, but you'll have to log back into Telegram.
Please note that clearing the cache will not affect important messages and data stored in the cloud—they will remain available for download.

To reduce cache buildup in the future, you can set limits on data storage:
- Reduce the retention period for local data (for example, 3 days, 1 month).
- Turn off automatic media downloads in large groups and chats.
