On May 4, an administrative citation was issued to the N. A. (Nekrasovka) on May 4, an administrative citation was issued for “propaganda” of non-traditional sexual relationships (Part 1 of Article 6.21 of the Code of Administrative Offenses). The Nekrasovka Library is considered one of the largest libraries in Russia. Its collection includes over 1 million items in more than 100 languages of the world’s peoples, including academic, popular science, and fiction literature, books in foreign languages, newspapers and magazines, rare books, etc.; the institution also maintains a reference and bibliographic system covering a wide range of subjects. The specific nature of the claims against the public library has not been specified. A court date has not yet been set.
Under the law on “LGBT propaganda,” organizations face serious penalties, including fines of up to 1 million rubles or suspension of operations for up to 90 days.
The Nekrasov Library is one of the oldest public libraries in Moscow. The library hosts lectures, concerts, exhibitions, and discussion clubs.
Prior to this, the Russian government had repeatedly fined citizens and organizations under administrative article 6.21. Similar reports were filed, for example, against video platforms such as “Kinopoisk,” Wink, and others.
In February, a Moscow court fined a top executive at Wink 200,000 rubles for providing access to LGBT-themed images. The same service, as well as “Ivi” and “Kinopoisk,” were fined 3 million and 3.5 million rubles, respectively, for “LGBT propaganda.”
