As of July 1, 2024, Latvia began officially recognizing and registering civil partnerships regardless of the gender of the partners.
At the same time, Article 110 of the Latvian Constitution states that “marriage is a union between a man and a woman.”
Lawyers say that a civil partnership is not a full-fledged substitute for marriage, but it does help resolve many issues that may arise between two people who live together and share a household. In just one year, from July 1, 2024, to July 1, 2025, 613 civil partnerships were registered in Latvia, 235 of which were same-sex unions.
