"Mediazona" reported...that the streaming service "Amediateka" cut a total of 46 minutes of content from the Russian version of the series "The Walking Dead" due to censorship restrictions.
The bulk of the censorship—more than 80%—affects scenes with LGBTQ themes. Specifically, storylines involving Tara Chambler’s romantic relationships with women, as well as scenes featuring recruiters Aaron and Eric, have been removed.
In some cases, the censorship was excessive. For example, scenes from Seasons 9–11 were cut in which Kelly and Connie, sisters from the Magna group, show concern for one another, even though their relationship has no romantic or sexual undertones.
Also excluded from the second season is the storyline involving Lori Grimes's thoughts on abortion, as well as certain scenes involving drugs and homophobic jokes.
Censorship has also affected the franchise's spin-offs, including *The Walking Dead: Dead City” and “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” where scenes related to the LGBTQ community have been cut.
- "The Walking Dead" is one of the most popular TV series franchises of the past decade. The series premiered in 2010, and its final, eleventh season aired in 2022. The franchise has six official spin-offs.
- Following the Russian Supreme Court’s ban on the activities of the “international LGBT movement,” in the country, there has been an increase in instances of scenes featuring LGBTQ characters being cut from films, restrictions on access to musical works, and the removal from sale of books related to LGBTQ themes.
