Fire Island is a two- to three-hour trip from New York City. The place is known for its distinctive aesthetic: wooden boardwalks instead of paved roads, well-kept homes, and proximity to the ocean. At the same time, vacationing here is expensive: a regular coffee costs about $10, while a bed in a house starts at $250 per night.

The island's defining feature is its complete sense of freedom. Vacationers openly walk around naked or in teeny-tiny swim briefs, and the atmosphere is conducive to quick hookups: many come here looking for sex literally from the moment they step off the ferry.

However, even in New York, migrants sometimes encounter aggression. Dima's husband had an unpleasant experience at a local club: after he mentioned in a conversation with another patron that he had come from Russia, the other man dumped a bucket of ice over his head.

Dealing with Sarcasm and Using ChatGPT

One of the main challenges for recent arrivals is the cultural barrier. Oleg, the channel's host and a trained journalist, noted that the sarcasm common among Russian speakers is perceived as rudeness and aggression in the United States. Directly translating phrases with a translation app often sounds offensive to Americans, who are accustomed to polite small talk and responses to every message.

To adapt their communication style and learn how to message locals appropriately, the protagonists have to run their responses through ChatGPT. Migrants also note the difference in street culture: while making eye contact with a stranger on the Moscow Metro could provoke an aggressive question “What are you staring at?”, in the United States, you have to get used to a completely different dynamic of eye contact.

The adult content boom among migrants

Another subject of the report, Edward, was born in Ukraine, lived in Spain, and earned a master’s degree in finance in Boston. In the United States, he decided to try his hand at escorting and creating adult content.

According to the interviewees, following the introduction of repressive anti-LGBT laws in Russia, there has been a sharp influx of Russian-speaking creators into the European and American adult industry. For many, this offers a quick path to financial independence and a way to build a personal brand, despite the risks to their privacy and potential reactions from family members.
