LGBTQ+ people of the older generation in Russia often remain an "invisible" group, since most services and media are focused on young people. However, research Groups "Exit"conducted in 2025 made it possible to analyze the experience of 903 respondents between the ages of 45 and 70 and identify the unique challenges they face.

Socio-Economic Portrait: Stability and Hidden Risks
The average age of the study participants was 49.35 years. The majority live in Russia (78%), mainly in megacities - Moscow (31%) and St. Petersburg (18%). Economically, this group looks more stable than queer youth: 56% имеют постоянную работу full-time.
However, deep inequalities are hidden behind the overall stability. Transgender women and non-binary people were the most vulnerable: One in four trans women and one in three non-binary people have enough money only for food. In addition, this generation falls on the "double load": 42% имеют детей, а 34% вынуждены ухаживать за пожилыми родственниками.
Life "in the closet": total closure and social isolation
One of the most acute problems is Extremely low level of openness.
• 50,3% of respondents have a low index of openness, hiding their identity in almost all spheres of life.
• People are the least likely to open up to neighbors (only 6.5%) and work colleagues (17%).
• The most closed group was bisexual people: 89% of them hide their orientation from their neighbors, and 72% — from colleagues.
Forced secrecy leads to social isolation. Every fourth respondent (26%) regularly experiences feeling lonely, and among transgender women, this figure reaches 40%. The study confirmed that the higher the openness and connection with the community, the lower the risk of depression and loneliness.

Discrimination and State Pressure
Over the past 10 years, the lives of LGBTQ+ people in Russia have become much more dangerous. Many people avoid discrimination only because carefully hide their identity. Nevertheless, the facts of violence remain massive:
• 29% have been physically or verbally abused by strangers.
• 19% faced persecution by the state (among the poorest groups, this figure rises to 58%).
• 15% experienced violence within the family, including threats from relatives and adult children.
Respondents describe cases of extortion by the security forces, threats of deprivation of parental rights and dismissal due to the "discrepancy" of appearance with the documents.
Health and Barriers in Medicine
The medical field remains an area of high discomfort. 10% of the respondents faced direct difficulties in obtaining help because of their identity. Doctors often perceive queer people as "pathology," and transgender people have effectively lost access to legal hormone therapy and surgeries since the passage of repressive laws.
The situation with HIV deserves special attention: 11% респондентов имеют положительный статус, which is several times higher than in the youth samples. This creates a huge demand for information about the age characteristics of life with HIV and support in interacting with government agencies.

Digital life and security
Telegram is the main communication channel - it is used daily 95% respondents. At the same time, 66% респондентов испытывают постоянную тревогу из-за возможной слежки спецслужб. Основным барьером при поиске информации стала государственная цензура и блокировки (90% случаев). У аудитории существует острый запрос на обучение цифровой безопасности и методам обхода блокировок (настройка VPN).

A 2025 study shows that LGBTQ+ people over the age of 45 are a resourceful but extremely closed group living in conditions constant stress and invisibility. To work with them, it is critically important Anonymity Guarantees, transparent safety protocols and the involvement of qualified specialists who understand the age specifics of the queer experience.
