On the afternoon of September 23, the journalist lost his footing on the stairs at a hotel in Neryungri and suffered a severe head injury in the fall. According to preliminary reports from doctors, the impact caused cerebral edema, and subsequent surgery failed to save his life.

There is also speculation that he experienced medical complications before the fall. People close to the critic and media sources noted that the fall may have been caused by a dislodged blood clot triggered by the long flight to the region and his pre-existing heart problems. The journalist's mother, Antonina Petrovna, confirmed that her son had flown out of Moscow on September 21 via Blagoveshchensk and had not complained of feeling unwell before the trip. The critic's brother Vladimir and their mother initially refused to believe what had happened, assuming the first calls were a scam or a prank.
