One of the most influential politicians of the CDU, Jens Spahn, resigned as head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag after it became known that he and his husband Daniel Funke became the parents of a child born to a surrogate mother in the United States. In a letter to the deputies, Spahn wrote that his "personal happiness" and the decision to start a family with her husband turned out to be incompatible with a political position. Reports BILD.
Recall that the former Chairman of the ruling CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag Jens Spahn and his husband Daniel Funke announcedthat they had a son, Georg. The couple resorted to surrogacy services. In Germany, surrogacy is prohibited, so the child was carried and born by a woman in the United States. Both fathers promise that she will participate in the boy's life:
"Now she is practically part of the family and will accompany Georg on his life path".
Scandal turned out to be especially painful for the Union, because surrogacy is prohibited in Germany, and the CDU itself opposes its legalization. Spahn has also criticized this practice before. After the news of the birth of a child, there was almost no public support in the party, and the head of the CDU in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Daniel Peters, was the first to openly demand his resignation.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz called Spahn's departure "the right thing to do" and "inevitable," saying that trust and political persuasiveness remain the main capital in politics. Spahn himself retains the mandate of a deputy, but Merz will now have to urgently look for a new head of the faction.
