On Sunday, June 21, a festival was held in New York Folsom Street East (FSE). This is the largest street festival of BDSM and fetish culture on the East Coast of the United States, which annually turns one of the Manhattan neighborhoods into a space for radical self-expression. Me and the photographer Andy Stark We went to the heart of this closed community to understand how this event works and why it is increasingly called the "shadow of the past".
The history of the festival began with an event called "The Leather County Fair", which was held by the Gay Male S&M Activists (GMSMA). In those days, the community was invited to the legendary, now closed men's leather club Mineshaft. In 1997, the name was changed to Folsom Street East by analogy with the famous fair in San Francisco, and the action itself was brought to the streets of the city.

The mission of the festival is to create safe and inclusive spaces for people of all genders and orientations, where they can openly demonstrate their fetishes without fear of stigma. In addition, the event is charitable: the proceeds are donated to organizations that help LGBTQ+ people and immigrants.
In 2026, the festival was held on Sunday, June 21, in the Chelsea neighborhood (on 27th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues). Despite the provocative theme, the program of the event is quite structured: about 50 vendors sold leather clothing, shoulder belts, toys and thematic art. On the street, you could see master classes in shibari (the Japanese art of binding), spanking and other BDSM practices.
Dress code of the festival: leather, rubber, uniform Encouraged, but not mandatory – regular streetwear is also acceptable.

For those for whom the main program is not enough, the bar has traditionally become the epicenter of the afterparty The Eagle, located just a block from the festival venue.
Despite the status of the "main leather event of the year", skepticism is growing in the community. Unlike the San Francisco fair, where nudity and sex in public are part of the culture, in New York the law strictly prohibits it. Participants in discussions on Reddit note that the festival has become "much more modest" and "less wild."

Among the reasons for the decline are gentrification: the construction of luxury residential complexes in Chelsea has led to the fact that the new neighbors are not delighted with the sight of "leather daddies" and demonstrative vices under their windows. In addition, admission to the festival is officially considered free (it is a public street), but the organizers actively asked for a "recommended donation" of about $ 20, which is not to everyone's liking.
From the editors of Doberman.media: This article is about why, in a society where any "deviation from the norm" can still be perceived as a threat, space for safe "strangeness" becomes vital. Folsom Street East (FSE) For almost 30 years, he has been proving that such zones are not only about fetish, but also about The right to be yourself in the broadest sense.
The real freedom that the FSE organisers claim is based on a simple principle: no one has the right to judge you for your preferences, as long as you respect the boundaries of others. The festival creates the very same "safe and positive environment", where sexual self-knowledge is supported rather than punished by social censure. It is a place where "leather flags" fly as a symbol of belonging to a community that puts Mutual consent and authenticity higher than imposed social standards.
If your city today does not give you the opportunity to breathe openly and be yourself, the experience of the global fetish movement is from Berlin's Folsom Europe up to Chicago IML — shows that you are not alone. The world is much wider than one street or one city.
