Barry Drewitt-Barlow, who became widely known as one of the first openly gay fathers in the United Kingdom to have children through a surrogate mother, has been formally charged with serious crimes. Along with his husband, By Scott Hutchinson, he appeared in court on charges of rape, sexual violence, and human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
According to reports Sky News and The Guardian, the alleged crimes were committed over a period of several years in the territory of Essex and Manchester. Several men are listed as victims in the case.

At this point, the following is known:
- Both men deny their guilt.
- The court ruled to keep them in custody.
- The next hearing will take place at Chelmsford Crown Court next month.
- The police are continuing their investigation and are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the investigators.
The Story of the Fall Barry Drewitt-Barlow first came to public attention in 1999, when he and his former partner, Tony Barlow, became one of the first same-sex couples in Britain legally recognized as the parents of children born via surrogacy in the United States. Their story received widespread media coverage, became the subject of documentary films, and sparked heated debates about raising children in LGBT families.
In recent years, Barry has continued to be a public figure. In 2025, he and his husband, Scott Hutchinson, purchased the soccer club Maldon and Tiptree FC. However, the current trial has once again placed Drewitt-Barlow in the public spotlight, this time in connection with serious criminal charges.
