LGBT Community Center (The Center)
About
The largest LGBT center in the United States, founded in 1983 in a former school building in the West Village; a designated New York City landmark. Open seven days a week. The center's programs include addiction recovery and support (Center CARE), health and wellness, family and youth services, economic development, legal and social services, cultural events, and community gatherings. Hundreds of groups and organizations meet in the building, including support groups for people living with HIV, LGBT youth, seniors, and immigrants. Identity House holds sessions twice a week (free peer counseling; see separate listing). There is a café, a library, and an art collection inside. Walk-in services are available during staff intake hours.
