About
A historic gay bar in Greenwich Village and the site of the Stonewall riots on June 28, 1969, widely regarded as the beginning of the modern LGBT rights movement. The building consists of two former stables dating from the 1840s (51–53 Christopher St); it became a gay club in 1967, and the current bar opened in 1990. A U.S. National Historic Landmark and part of the Stonewall National Monument (2016). Two bar areas, a lively atmosphere, drag shows, and DJ nights; especially busy on weekends and during Pride season. The crowd is mixed, with many tourists. Nearby is Christopher Park, home to the Gay Liberation sculpture. Nearest subway: 1 — Christopher St–Sheridan Sq.
