The Danish investment bank Saxo Bank publishes an annual list of “shocking predictions”—unlikely but potentially significant events that could impact financial markets. For 2025, the bank’s analysts predict a series of dramatic changes, ranging from Donald Trump’s return to power in the U.S. to the collapse of OPEC and the bankruptcy of a major insurance company due to climate change.
Trump's Return and the Collapse of the Dollar
According to a forecast by Saxo Bank, Donald Trump’s reelection as U.S. president in 2024 could lead to a radical restructuring of the global economy. His “Trump 2.0” policy, focused on deglobalization and protectionism, could cause the dollar to fall by 20% against other currencies and by 30% against gold. The imposition of massive import tariffs and the reduction of the budget deficit will lead to the cryptocurrency market growing to $10 trillion. At the same time, the U.S. economy will receive a boost, and wages will rise in line with commodity inflation.
The Electric Car Boom and the End of OPEC
Saxo Bank predicts that by 2025, electric vehicles will become cheaper than their gasoline-powered counterparts due to falling battery costs. This will lead to peak oil consumption, followed by a sharp decline in oil demand. Key members will leave OPEC, and the organization will cease to exist. Former cartel members will maximize production, leading to a collapse in oil prices. Airlines, manufacturers of chemicals, paints, and tires, as well as freight and logistics companies, will benefit.
Climate Catastrophe and Insurers' Bankruptcy
Climate change will lead to unprecedented natural disasters. Saxo Bank predicts that a catastrophic storm in the U.S. will cause damage many times greater than the $40 billion paid out in claims following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. One of the largest U.S. insurance companies, having underestimated the risks of climate change, will go bankrupt due to its inability to cover the losses. As a result, real estate prices in many housing markets will fall.
Other “shocking predictions”
In addition to the ones listed above, Saxo Bank has made other forecasts for 2025:
Nvidia will release the Blackwell chip, which will increase AI computing performance by a factor of 25, doubling the company's market capitalization compared to Apple's.
China will allocate 50 trillion yuan to stimulate the economy, which will strengthen the yuan and drive up commodity prices.
The U.S. will impose a tax on AI data centers, which will lead to a surge in investment in energy infrastructure and a rise in gas prices.
The pound sterling will recover its losses against the euro following “Brexit” and reach 1.27 euros.
It is important to note that Saxo Bank’s “shocking forecasts” are not predictions of the future, but rather an attempt to present unlikely yet potentially significant scenarios. The purpose of these forecasts is to stimulate discussion and help investors prepare for unexpected turns in the financial markets.
