Nikolay Efimov is a tester (QA engineer) from Bryansk, who moved to the United States and in a few years turned his YouTube channel into one of the highest quality educational projects about emigration. Unlike classic bloggers, Efimov explores America not through emotions, but through Figures, tables and deep historical context.
Yuri Dud met with Nikolay in Miami to discuss how the IT market has changed, why Americans eat "yoga mats" and how Cuban migration has created a unique image of modern Florida.
In short: What is this video about?
Miami is a "draft" of the future of the United States. By 2045, white Americans will no longer be the majority, and the country will become more Hispanic and Hispanic.
The IT market has turned into a "bloodbath". The era of "cookies in the office" is over; Now hundreds of people can apply for the vacancy of a tester, and the requirements have increased significantly.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the main threat to white-collar workers. Nikolay gives himself another 3-5 years in the profession before algorithms radically change the industry.
Life as a data set. Efimov records each of his expenses in the application for 7 years (more than 100 thousand transactions) and analyzes the composition of products through the application so as not to eat sugar.
Why has Miami ceased to be an American city?
Miami — the capital of Latin America. 70% of the city's population speaks Spanish, and more than half of the residents were born outside the United States. Nikolai names the city "Draft of the Future", because the demographic processes that have already ended here will soon cover the entire country.
Background: The appearance of the city was formed by five waves of Cuban migration.
- "Golden Migration" (1959): After the revolution in Cuba, the elite fled to Miami - white professionals and businessmen. The U.S. used them as a "showcase for capitalism" in the Cold War.
- Mariel Exodus (1980): Fidel Castro allowed everyone to leave, but together with ordinary people, he "slipped" prisoners and patients of psychiatric clinics to the Americans. This led to a surge in crime and the appearance of the image of Tony Montana from Scarface.
Today, Miami has become the norm mass bilingualism. Stadiums advertise in two languages, and Latin Americans are the main driving force of the economy, spending the most in the country.
What is happening in IT: from "cookies" to "bloodbath"
Nikolay started his career in 2016, when it was enough to be a "confident PC user" to enter the test. Today, the situation is radically different.
- Competition: Hundreds of applications come for one vacancy. Even an experienced specialist can send 150 resumes and get only 5 responses.
- A Paradigm Shift: If earlier companies lured employees with bonuses, now the slogan of employers is: "Be glad that there is work."
- Dismissal "one hour": In the United States, an employee can be deprived of access to mail and fired instantly, sometimes for carelessly speaking into the microphone on a general call.
AI Prediction: Efimov believes that office workers will be the first to be hit. He compares the current situation with the Industrial Revolution and the Ludite movement. The "last to leave" will be those who will head the robot departments.
American food and the "sugar curse"
One of the most popular topics on Nikolai's channel is food. It explains why 3/4 of Americans are overweight.
- Ultra-processed foods: 60% калорий американские дети получают из еды, которая была «пересобрана» заново.
- Sponge bread: American bread is supplemented with components that are used in yoga mats to make it unnaturally soft.
- Sugar syrup: Almost all sugar in the United States is extracted from corn, it is as cheap as possible and is added to almost everything.
Nikolay himself uses the application Yuka, which scans barcodes and scores products based on their harmfulness.
Life in numbers: Taxes and budget
Efimov is a "nerd" in matters of finance. He knows that in Poland his family lived in 2000 per month, and in the United States - about 6000 (excluding taxes).
Nicholas's main discovery in America: Taxes are the largest item of expenditurethat exceeds the cost of housing and insurance. At the same time, he notes that in the United States there are legal ways to optimize taxation, which he treats as setting up the system.
What else did Nikolay Efimov tell us?
- About the policy: The most adequate politician in Trump's entourage is Cuban Marco Rubio, who may become the next president.
- On freedom of speech: In the United States, it is possible to burn the American flag as a form of protest, and this is constitutional.
- About investments: To cope with anxiety, Nikolay does not check the news in the morning, but stock quotes in the Robinhood app. "The graph shows whether people are afraid or greedy."
- About the dream: To end the war.
What is the power? Nikolai admits that he would have answered "in freedom" before, but now he understands that the more he learns, the less he understands how things really work.
