It turns out that even healthy food can become poisonous if it is seasoned with medicines. Read this article and remember what combinations of food and medications are dangerous for your body.
Alcohol and paracetamol
Your body uses the same enzyme to break down alcohol and paracetamol. Try to take at least an 8-hour break between the use of these substances. Remember that serious consequences will not appear immediately, but over time, so if you drink every day, then It is better to refuse to take paracetamol at all. Their daily combination will lead to pathologies of the kidneys and liver.
Antonio Benedi, an aide to President George H.W. Bush, drank 3-4 glasses of wine a day. In 1993, he caught a cold and took 10 tablets of paracetamol for 4 days. This therapeutic dose was enough for him to get into intensive care, and then for a liver transplant.
Grapefruit and cough medicine
As well as a combination of medicine with lime and pomelo. These fruits block the production of an enzyme that processes statins and other drugs, such as the cough medicine dextromethorphan. As a result, the drug accumulates in the blood, which can lead to unwanted side effects. In the case of a combination of citrus fruits with dextromethorphan, hallucinations and drowsiness may appear, and with statins, serious muscle damage may occur. The effect of these fruits lasts a little more than a day, which means that they and medicines should be taken at least 24-hour intervals. And what if you're obsessed with citrus fruits? You don't have to be a Paracelsus to tell you to give up the medicines listed.
Dairy products and antibiotics
Some antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, combine in the stomach with calcium, iron, and other minerals from the milk you drink. This leads to the fact that the antibiotic is poorly absorbed and, accordingly, the effectiveness of its fight against infections is sharply reduced.
When you buy a new medicine for asthma or colds, first ask if this medicine belongs to the group of so-called tetracyclines or fluoroquinols. If it does, try to avoid milk, yogurts, and cheeses for 2 hours before and after taking your medication.
And if you are also taking multivitamin or mineral complexes, then check this time with the pharmacist, as they can have a similar effect.
Smoked meats and antidepressants
Read carefully what is written on the label of your pills. If they contain monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, then taking them together with foods rich in the amino acid tyramine will lead to a dangerous spike in blood pressure. Unfortunately, the list of products containing this amino acid is not limited to kebab and smoked salmon. It also includes red wine, sauerkraut, hot dogs, aged cheeses and draught or homemade beer. However, do not panic ahead of time! Canned food or bottled beer probably won't hurt you, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are rapidly being replaced by new-generation antidepressants that don't have these side effects.
Chocolate and Ritalin
In addition to caffeine, chocolate also contains a stimulant called theobromine. It is because of this substance that chocolate is harmful to dogs - they simply cannot digest it. Getting both of these stimulants into your body can lead to unpredictable consequences and cause seizures.
Just like the effects of caffeine, the effects of combining chocolate and Ritalin are highly individual.
So the best solution is this: if you feel too nervous, irritable, and excited after taking Ritalin and a chocolate bar, then try increasing the time between taking the medicine and the chocolate dessert. Or choose milk or white chocolate: the darker the chocolate, the more caffeine and theobromine it contains.
Apple juice and allergy medications
Caution! If you are taking hay fever medication, do not consume apple, orange, or grapefruit juice with it without waiting 4 hours after taking the pills. These juices inhibit the peptide that transports the drug from the intestines to the blood. As a result, the effectiveness of the drug decreases by 70 percent, which will make it almost meaningless, and your runny nose and sneezing will become non-stop. Also eliminate these juices when using the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, thyroid treatment synthroid, or allergy and asthma remedies singular.
Cinnamon, cassia and warfarin
People who have been taking the blood-thinning drug warfarin for a long time know that vitamin K is very important while taking it. They contain a large amount of vitamin K, which plays a key role in blood clotting, and its decrease will have a bad effect on its density. But here another problem arises. Cassia cinnamon (cheap cinnamon from China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, which is often sold as "Indonesian cinnamon") contains a substance called coumarin, which, like the drug warfarin, thins the blood. Taking both of these substances can cause serious liver damage. If you take warfarin, but at the same time cannot live without a cup of aromatic cinnamon coffee, then switch to a high-quality Ceylon cinnamon variety.
